Inishbofin Island Ireland

One of the most beautiful islands off the west coast, lnishbofin is reached by ferry from Cleggan. Today it has a population of about 200 people but was chosen in 665 by St. Coleman for the site of his monastery as it was a place of tranquility. That same sense of peace still exists today. A roofless thirteenth century chapel in the present day graveyard is said to be the site of his monastery.

The harbour entrance is dominated by the Cromwellian fort which was a prison camp for catholic priests. Because of the practice of more traditional methods of farming, animals and birds whose habitats are under threat in other parts of the country still flourish here. The seals which enjoy the clear unpolluted waters around the island also come up onto the rocks and beaches to sunbathe and play.

INISHTURK: Inishturk Island lies nine miles off the Galway Mayo coast to the north of Inishbofin. The island has a population of ninty-eight. It is an ideal location for a family holiday offering a peaceful and intimate way of life and brings back to you the values of a people at one with nature. Here one finds unrivalled scenery, wholesome home cooking and traditional crafts (curragh making/basket weaving).

The island is a paradise for the outdoor enthusiast - the cliff flora is of international importance - those interested in ornithology will be enthralled by the number of bird sanctuaries - the wild Atlantic waters will tempt experienced divers to explore their depths - there's boat trips to neighbouring islands, deep sea and rock angling - Celtic and early Christian fortified habitations are to be found and a fulachta fiada has been located on the island - there are sheltered beach coves with the clearest blue waters in Europe. Relax and enjoy the friendly atmosphere in the Community Club which hosts traditional music sessions, frequent folk dancing and ceilidhe.

The island can be accessed from CLEGGAN PIER and from ROONAGH PIER.
